Java Enterprise Study Group

Java Enterprise Study Group

note: no meetings planned - for those interested please send a message to the Yahoo group or vote on the poll at either Yahoo or Meetup groups

The Java Enterprise Study Group will focus on the latest EJB 3 specifications and will be useful for those studying for SCBCD 5 certification. We will also examine additional web, IOC and persistence frameworks (e.g. Struts 2, Spring, Hibernate, JSF, Guice and others). We'll also examine various JEE application servers and EJB 3 containers.

We are IDE neutral. Java programming knowledge is a prerequisite, (including ant, servlets and jsp). Please bring your laptop and your choice of IntelliJ, Eclipse, Netbeans, notepad or emacs for hands-on coding. We will use the sample code found in the resources listed below in addition to the EJB 3 specifications.

Current topics:
  • Ongoing introduction to EJB 3. We were previously using the Apress book (second book listed below). See sample chapter on Stateless and stateful session beans: Chapter 2 - EJB 3 Session Beans Currently we are following the book "EJB 3 in Action" (Manning). Reza Rahman (one of the authors) was a guest speaker at our group and provided additional code.
  • Although we are using Glassfish as the EJB 3 container (used by most books and Sun's FirstCup example), we will also review how to use the OpenEJB 3 EJB 3 container.
  • On occasion there will be an overlap with the SCEA 5 (Certifified Enterprise Architect) study group.

current and related study materials (see full list at link below):

* EJB 3 in Action (Manning)

* Beginning EJB 3 Application Development: From Novice to Professional (Apress)

* Enterprise JavaBeans 3.0, 5th Edition (O'Reilly)

* Pro EJB 3: Java Persistence API (Apress)

* recommended books for studying for SCBCD 5 (EJB 3) Certification
