Java Programmer's Certification Study Group (SCJP)

please stay tuned to main page for news on the 2009 fall session which will cover the new SCJP 6 Plus certification

What and why?: The Sun Certified Java Programme (SCJP) for the Java 6 platform is probably the most challenging and comprehensive of the Sun Java certifications (and a prerequisite for most of the other Sun Java certifications). Unlike previous SCJP exams (1.4 and earlier) there is now more emphasis on understanding and programming skills and less on memorization.

Meeting Schedule: Please refer to the main page for the latest updates to the schedule!

NOTE: this exam has been updated to SCJP 6 - the new material will be added and discussed at the study group meetings. Please note there is a new edition of the book.

Details:
Exam Objectives for SCJP 6 (CX-310-065)
Number of questions: 72
Time limit: 210 minutes (3 1/2 hours)
Exam type: Multiple choice and drag and drop
Pass score: 65% (47 of 72 questions)
Average time per question: 2 minutes and 55 seconds.
Test Center Exam Fee: $300 (this is usually tax deductible)

There is no partial credit on multiple answer questions but you are not penalized for wrong answers (guessing). If there is more than one correct answer you will be told how many.

When studying it's recommended that you not know how many correct answers a questions has, not to guess if unsure of a question (leave unanswered for an accurate assessment), give yourself 2 minutes per question, and aim for a 75% score. Make sure to take at least two mock exams under exam conditions (as per above) prior to scheduling the actual exam.

Textbook

For Sun Certified Programmer for the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition 6.0 (310-065)
SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 6 Study Guide - by Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates (Osbourne)
Highly Recommended! From the developers of the exam and founders of http://JavaRanch.com
also referred to as the K&B book

NEW: Spring 2009 session starts Thursday March 12 at NYPC (New Yorker Hotel Suite 550 - 34th St and 8th Ave) - meeting weekly

For SCJP 6, the SCJP 5 book is still relevant with the following additions:
  • Console API - to be covered along with chapter 6
  • NavigableSet - to be covered with collections chapter 7
  • NavigableMap - to be covered with collections chapter 7
But please note that the questions have changed somewhat - please try to get the latest edition

Study Group Objectives
The Java Certification Study Group is a weekly (or bi-weekly depending on group members) self led study group. Each week we will discuss a new chapter from the highly recommended Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates book (K&B) - see above.

Format: Open Q&A and quick review of chapter content followed by an in depth coverage of the end of chapter Review questions (taken during session so don't read these prior to the meeting).

It is important that every Study Group member read the chapter ahead of time (at least on the way to the meeting).

Additional Notes:
We will try to cover a chapter per meeting with few exceptions as voted by current study group members. If the group feels that a chapter must be reviewed again that is allowable however it will lengthen the session beyond the recommended 10 week schedule, it is not recommended that you take much more than 10 weeks to cover one pass of the book. We will also try to schedule a mock exam under exam conditions.
