Java Programmer's Certification Study Group (SCJP) This page is a place holder - Please go to the new page: Java 6 Programmer Certification What and why?: The Sun Java Programmer's Certification (SCJP CX-310-05) for Java 5 (1.5) platform is probably the most challenging and comprehensive of the Sun Java certifications (and a prerequisite for most of the other Sun Java certifications). Unlike previous SCJP exams (e.g. 1.4) there is more emphasis on understanding and programming skills and less on memorization. Meeting Schedule: 6:30pm-9pm at either NYPC or the Skylight Diner or location voted on by members Please refer to the main page (bottom, after general meeting description) for the latest schedule! NOTE: this exam has just been updated to SCJP 6! - the new material will be added here soon and discussed at the study group meetings Details: Exam Objectives ![]() Number of questions: 72 Time limit: 175 minutes (2 hours and 55 minutes) Exam type: Multiple choice and drag and drop Pass score: 59% (43 of 72 questions) Averge time per question: 2 min 25 seconds. There is no partial credit on multiple answer questions but you are not penalized for wrong answers (guessing). If there is more than one correct answer you will be told how many. For preparation however, it's recommended that you not know how many correct answers a questions has, not to guess if unsure of a question (leave unanswered for an accurate assessment), give yourself 2 minutes per question, and aim for a 80% score. Make sure to take several mock exams under exam conditions (above) prior to scheduling the actual exam. This group resumed for a fall session starting the last week of October - please refer to the Main Page for the definitive location and dates. See additional notes below. Group Notes - 2007 Note: For the previous Java certification study group meetings of 2005/2006: previous SCJP 5 session Textbook For Sun Certified Programmer for the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition 5.0 (CX-310-055) SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 5 Study Guide - by Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates (Osbourne)Highly Recommended! From developers of the exam and founders of http://JavaRanch.com ![]() also referred to as the K&B book Session Objectives The Java Certification Study Group is a weekly self led study group. Each week we will discuss a new chapter from the highly recommended Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates Book (K&B). Format: Open Q&A and quick review of chapter content followed by an in depth coverage of the end of chapter Review questions (taken during session so don't read these prior to the meeting). It is important that every Study Group member read the entire chapter ahead of time (and try the hands on exercise in the chapters). Additional Notes: We will try to cover a chapter per meeting with few exceptions as voted by current study group members, e.g. chapters 3 & 4 can be covered in 1 meeting and Chapter 7 will be covered in 2 meetings. If the group feels that a chapter must be reviewed again that is allowable however it will lengthen the session beyond the recommended 10 week schedule, it is not recommended that you take more than 10 weeks to cover one pass of the book.
